But Newborn Photography Is So Expensive...

June 24, 2026

Let's Break It Down 🤍

I completely understand why people sometimes experience sticker shock when looking into newborn photography.

When you're preparing for a baby, there are already so many expenses.
Prams.
Cots.
Car seats.
Nappies.
The list goes on.

So when you start researching newborn photographers, it's natural to wonder:

"Why does newborn photography cost what it does?"

Let's break it down.

You're Not Just Paying For One Hour

When you see a newborn session on my website, you're seeing the finished result.

What you don't see is everything that happens behind the scenes.

Before your session:

  • Emails and planning

  • Scheduling around due dates

  • Session preparation

  • Washing and preparing wraps, blankets, outfits and props

During your session:

  • Typically 2–3 hours in the studio

  • Feeding breaks

  • Settling baby

  • Family and sibling photos

  • Creating a calm experience for everyone involved

After your session:

  • Culling hundreds of images

  • Hand-editing your gallery

  • Skin retouching

  • Gallery preparation and delivery

A session may only take place on one day, but the work extends far beyond that.

You're Paying For Experience

Newborn photography isn't just photography.

It's safely handling and posing tiny babies.
It's reading their cues.
It's knowing when to stop, when to settle, and when to adapt.

It's understanding that every baby is different.

Over the years I've photographed hundreds of newborns, and that experience helps create a smoother, safer, and more relaxed session for families.

You're Paying For The Years Ahead

This is the part people often don't think about.

The bassinet won't last forever.
The newborn clothes won't fit for long.
The sleepy stretches and tiny fingers disappear before you realise.

The photos become more valuable with time.

Five years from now.
Ten years from now.
Twenty years from now.

The images often become one of the few tangible things that remain from those early newborn days.

It Doesn't Have To Be For Everyone

And that's okay.

Not every family chooses professional photography, just like not every family chooses professional cakes, flowers, or holidays.

But for the families who do, they're investing in preserving a moment they'll never get back.

The Real Question

Perhaps the question isn't:

"Why is newborn photography so expensive?"

But rather:

"How important is it to me to remember this stage?"

Because while babies grow quickly, photographs allow us to hold onto a little piece of that season forever 🤍
