My shift to shooting mainly newborns

When I first started my business, newborn photography wasn’t the plan.

I began with outdoor family sessions and worked alongside my husband shooting weddings. I loved the buzz of it all. Golden hour light, big wedding days, busy weekends. It was such a fun season and it taught me so much.

But over time, I felt a quiet pull toward something different.

We had a spare room at home and I decided to set up a tiny newborn space. It was simple and I was still very new to it. I was learning, experimenting, figuring out posing, light, workflow. It felt exciting but also a little unknown. I didn’t realise then how important that little room would become.

Then lockdown happened.

Like so many others, work stopped. Sessions were cancelled. Everything slowed down. But that pause gave me time. I poured energy into improving the room, changing things, refining the space. And during that time, I had my own baby.

With nowhere to be and nothing else to focus on, I documented her constantly. Every tiny stretch, every change in her face, every little milestone. I saw firsthand how quickly they grow. How different they look week to week. How fleeting that newborn stage really is.

That’s when it clicked.

I realised how much I truly loved newborn photography. Being home. Being close to my baby. Creating in a calm space. Watching other families experience those same early days that I was in myself.

When my second baby came along, outdoor work started to feel harder. Melbourne weather is unpredictable at the best of times. Postponing sessions, reshuffling around my girls’ schedules, organising babysitting because they weren’t in daycare. It became a lot to juggle.

And then came the garage conversion.

Turning that space into my studio felt like the cherry on top. My own space. My own sanctuary. A place designed specifically for this season of my business and my life. Calm, warm, consistent. No watching the sky for rain. No rushing to beat the sunset. Just families, babies, and quiet connection.

It suddenly made complete sense to focus primarily on newborn photography.

Today, around 90% of my work is newborn sessions in the studio. I still offer outdoor sessions, but they are very limited each month. This balance allows me to show up fully for my clients while also being present for my girls.

This shift wasn’t something I forced. It happened naturally, alongside becoming a mother, growing my family, and learning what kind of life I want to build.

Newborn photography isn’t just a service I offer. It feels personal. It feels aligned. It feels like exactly where I’m meant to be.

And I’m so grateful for every family who trusts me with those first tiny days.
