And it honestly gave me a lot to think about.
Lately I feel like I’ve been seeing more and more ads for AI apps that can turn everyday baby photos into “professional” newborn images.
You upload a few iPhone photos, choose a style, and suddenly your baby is wrapped up in a beautiful posed setup that looks like it came from a real studio session.
So of course… I had to try it myself.
I used a few newborn photos of my daughter’s that were already on my phone and let the AI create its version of a newborn gallery.
And honestly? Some of them looked really beautiful. It’s easy to see why these apps are becoming so popular.
Especially in a time where everything feels expensive and parents are already taking thousands of photos on their phones anyway.
But while I was looking through them, I kept thinking the same thing:
Newborn photography has never just been about the final photo.
There’s so much happening behind the image
When I think about my favourite newborn galleries I’ve ever delivered, it’s never just because the photo itself looked “perfect.”
It’s the memory attached to it.
It’s remembering how tiny their baby was that day.
How they kept curling into mum’s chest.
How dad looked completely exhausted but couldn’t stop smiling.
How emotional those early weeks really are.
And I think that’s the difference.
AI can create a beautiful image, but it can’t recreate a moment that actually happened.
It can’t capture your baby settling in your arms.
Or the nervous, happy, emotional feeling of becoming parents for the first time.
Those things are the part people hold onto years later.
I also think the experience matters more than people realise
A lot of parents tell me they almost didn’t book newborn photos because they already had “enough photos” on their phone.
And I completely understand that.
But usually after their session, they say the same thing:
They’re so grateful they slowed down and did it.
Not because they now have “perfect” photos.
But because they have proof of what that season felt like.
So… are AI newborn photos bad?
Not at all.
I actually think they’re fascinating, and as a fun little keepsake or experiment, I can absolutely see the appeal.
But personally, I don’t think they replace real newborn photography.
Because the value was never only in the image.
It’s in the memory.
The experience.
The connection.
The realness of it all.
And I think that’s why real photos will always mean something different.
