If you're bringing a toddler along to your newborn session, first of all—you’re not alone. Many families I photograph are adjusting to life with two (or more!) little ones, and it’s such a special season to capture.
That said… photographing toddlers and newborns together?
It’s unpredictable. It's chaotic. It's beautiful.
And yes—we make it work. Every time.
Toddlers Are Welcome Exactly As They Are
Toddlers are naturally curious, active, and sometimes a little unsure about this new tiny human in the family. My approach is always to meet them where they’re at—whether that means giving them a few moments to warm up, letting them take breaks, or involving them in playful ways.
There’s no pressure for perfect smiles. Real moments always win.
We Capture the Sibling Bond (Even If It’s Brief!)
Most toddlers won’t sit still for long—and that’s okay. I work quickly and creatively to capture sweet sibling moments, whether it's a gentle kiss, a curious touch, or even a candid glance. Sometimes all it takes is a second, and we’ve got the magic.
Timing Is Everything
If possible, I recommend bringing toddlers in at the beginning or end of the session, depending on their routine. We aim to get the sibling and family photos first, so they can head off with dad, a grandparent, or a snack while we focus on bub. The session is always flexible around your child’s needs.
Bring Snacks, Bribes, and Their Favourite Toy
Don’t be shy about bringing along snacks, a favourite teddy, or even an emergency lollypop! A familiar item can help them feel more settled in the studio, and I’ve got a few toddler-friendly tricks up my sleeve too.
Family Photos Matter
Even if you're tired, and your toddler is climbing the walls—please get in the frame. This season is short and intense, and the photos we take now will mean everything to you later. One day, your babies will look back and see how loved they were, right from the start.
My studio in Doreen is calm, cosy, and completely toddler-welcoming. If you’re worried about how your little one might go—don’t be. I’ve seen every version of toddler chaos, and I promise we’ll still capture something beautiful.
Let them be little. I’ll take care of the rest.
Warmly,
Chantelle
