Missed the Newborn Photography Boat? Here’s Why Older Babies in the Studio Are So Fun!

So, you had every intention of booking a newborn session… but the days flew by in a blur of feeding, nappies, and settling into life with your little one. Before you knew it, your baby was a few months old and you thought: “Oh no, I’ve missed it!”

The truth is — you haven’t missed out at all. While those squishy, sleepy newborn photos are beautiful, older babies bring their own magic into the studio. Here’s why photographing babies beyond the newborn stage is one of my favourite things to do:

1. Parents are more settled

By the time you bring your baby in a little later, you’re usually feeling more in a routine. That means less stress, more confidence, and an even more enjoyable session together.

2. Extra baby chunk!

Let’s be honest — a little extra squish makes those photos even cuter. Chubby cheeks, arm rolls, and those delicious baby thighs are all part of the joy of this stage.

3. More movement, more fun

As babies get older, they can roll, stretch, and hold their heads up for tummy time. This opens up so many new poses and angles that aren’t possible with sleepy newborns.

4. Smiles and giggles

Nothing compares to capturing your baby’s first smiles, gummy grins, and those contagious giggles. These joyful expressions make for the kind of photos you’ll treasure forever.

5. Every age is worth remembering

The truth is — there’s no “perfect” age for photos. Every stage of your baby’s life brings something new and wonderful, and every age is an opportunity to create memories you’ll never regret capturing.

So, if you’ve missed the newborn window, don’t stress for a second. Bring in your baby exactly as they are right now — because this age is worth celebrating too.

What REALLY Happens During a Newborn Session

From the photos you see online, newborn sessions look like pure magic—tiny babies sleeping peacefully, perfectly posed, with angelic little faces.

And yes… sometimes they are exactly like that.

But most of the time? They’re a beautiful, messy mix of real life.

Here’s what really goes on behind the scenes:

1. The Baby Doesn’t Always Want to Sleep

Even the tiniest newborn can have a mind of their own. There’s often a bit of (or a lot of) restlessness—crying, squirming, or staring at me wide-eyed. That’s where cuddles, nappy changes, dummies, and sometimes multiple feeds during the session come in.

2. Toddlers Have Other Plans

If your newborn has an older sibling, they might not be quite as excited about “photo day” as we are. We’re talking about the occasional tears, tantrums, and flat-out refusals. Cue the bribery, silly games, and some extra patience.

3. Bodily Functions Happen

Babies have perfect timing… for poo explosions and projectile vomits. I always have extra blankets, wraps, and swaddles on hand—and Photoshop for anything we can’t wipe away.

4. Sometimes the Parents Cry Too

Hormones, exhaustion, and the overwhelming emotions of this new chapter can hit all at once. Tears are welcome here—it’s a safe, judgment-free space.

5. The Key Is Letting Go of Expectations

Every baby (and family) is different. The best sessions happen when we embrace the chaos, take breaks when needed, and remember that the little in-between moments often make the most meaningful photos.

A newborn session isn’t just about “getting the shot”—it’s about capturing the real, raw, love-filled story of these early days.
Mess, magic, and all. 💛

From Spare Room to Dream Studio: The Heart Behind My Space

When I started Chantelle Elise Photography back in 2017, I was juggling a full-time job in childcare, studying my Bachelor of Early Childhood Education online, and dreaming big in between it all. Photography began as a creative outlet — something I squeezed in during weekends and golden hours, mostly shooting outdoor family sessions.

After a few years of capturing families under open skies, I felt a pull toward newborn photography. I tried a few in-home and outdoor newborn sessions, and while each one was special, I knew I wanted my own space. A place where I could control the light, create comfort, and welcome families without the chaos of packing up and travelling.

Back then, before kids, we had a spare bedroom at the back of the house — so I decided to give it a go. I put a little call-out online for practice newborn sessions and invited a few friends with new babies in. One session turned into another, then another. I slowly began upgrading the room, rearranging furniture, and investing in little touches to make it feel more like a studio and less like a guest room.

As my business grew, so did my family. The spare room setup — although once perfect — started to get a little tricky. The room was right at the back of our house, and I worked hard to keep the home spotless and professional for clients. But once my kids came along, keeping a clean house and tiptoeing around nap schedules became a challenge. I often had to plan shoots around nap times just to avoid waking them with my camera shutters and client chatter.

I always dreamed of having a space that was fully mine — somewhere calm, quiet, and separate, yet still close to the heart of home. And eventually, that dream became a plan when we decided to convert our garage into a proper studio.

It took a few months, but every detail was worth the wait. The new studio is light-filled, warm, and functional — a beautiful space where families can relax while I work my magic behind the lens. Best of all, it's separate from the house but still close enough that I can be nearby for my little ones.

These days, around 90% of my sessions are studio-based — from newborn to maternity to indoor family moments — and I’m loving the beautiful balance it brings to my work and family life.

My studio is more than just a room. It’s a space filled with heart, growth, and all the little pieces of my journey. If you’ve visited already, thank you for being part of this story. And if you’re new here — I can’t wait to welcome you in.

Don’t Fret If Baby Is Awake During Your Newborn Session

by Chantelle Elise Photography – Doreen, Melbourne

One of the most common worries I hear from new parents before their session is:
“What happens if my baby won’t sleep?”

Let me say this loud and clear—please don’t worry. Awake babies are just as beautiful to photograph, and I always work at your baby’s pace.

Every Baby Is Different

Some newborns sleep through their entire session, while others are wide-eyed and curious. Both are completely normal. As a professional newborn photographer based in Doreen, I’ve worked with sleepy babies, alert babies, fussy babies—you name it. And I promise, we’ll still get stunning, heartfelt images either way.

Awake Photos Can Be Just As Magical

There’s something truly special about those open-eyed shots—your baby looking right into the camera (or your eyes), taking in the world. These awake moments often turn out to be some of parents’ favourite images. They show personality, connection, and curiosity, even at just a few days old.

My Sessions Are 100% Baby-Led

I never force a baby into poses they’re not comfortable with. If bub is awake, we’ll swaddle them gently for some cozy, wrapped shots or capture beautiful parent cuddles. Some babies need extra feeding or soothing—that’s completely okay. You’ll never be rushed.

A Calm Studio = A Calm Baby

My Doreen studio is set up to be quiet, warm, and soothing—like a little sanctuary. From soft white noise to gentle wraps and a flexible pace, everything is designed to keep baby (and you!) as relaxed as possible.

I’ve got plenty of tricks up my sleeve if bub is a little unsettled—and if all they want is to be in mum or dad’s arms, those snuggly images often become the most meaningful ones.

Trust the Process

Whether baby sleeps soundly, stays wide-eyed, or gives us a mix of both—we’ll create a beautiful gallery that reflects your little one just as they are.

No stress. No pressure. Just honest, emotive images of your baby in their earliest days.

If you have questions or need reassurance before your session, I’m just an email or message away. My goal is always to make this experience calm, enjoyable, and full of joy—awake or asleep!

Warmly,
Chantelle

How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photography Session

by Chantelle Elise Photography – Doreen, VIC

Welcoming your baby into the world is such a special, fleeting moment—and I’m so honoured to capture it for you. If you’ve booked a newborn session at my Doreen studio, you might be wondering how to best prepare so that everything runs smoothly (and stress-free!). The good news? You don’t need to do much. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

1. Book Early—Ideally While You're Still Pregnant

The best time to photograph your newborn is within the first 5–14 days after birth, when babies are still sleepy, curled up, and settled. To ensure availability, I recommend booking during your second or early third trimester. Once your little one arrives, we’ll lock in the exact date.

2. Keep Baby Awake Before the Session (If You Can!)

A sleepy baby helps us achieve those sweet, peaceful poses. If possible, try to keep your baby awake for an hour or two before your session. A bath or some gentle playtime can help. Don’t worry if baby nods off earlier—every session is flexible and baby-led.

3. Dress Baby in Something Easy to Remove

Arrive with bub in a loose onesie or zip-up suit with no singlet underneath. This makes it easy for me to gently undress them without waking them up. Most of the time, baby will be wrapped or posed in soft fabrics I provide.

4. Feed Baby Just Before You Arrive

A full tummy = a happy, sleepy baby. If you’re bottle-feeding or breastfeeding, feeding just before or on arrival works best. You're always welcome to take feeding breaks during the session too—there’s no rush.

5. What to Bring

Here’s a quick checklist:

  • Nappies & wipes

  • A dummy (even if bub doesn't usually take one—it can help settle them just for the session)

  • A spare outfit for you, just in case

  • Any sentimental items you'd like included (heirloom blankets, name plaques, etc.)

6. What to Wear

I recommend simple, neutral-toned clothing for parents and siblings—think creams, soft greys, and beige. My studio style is timeless and minimal, and these tones photograph beautifully. If you need help choosing outfits, I’m happy to guide you!

7. Relax—You’re in Good Hands

Newborn sessions can take anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours. There’s no pressure. My space is calm, cosy, and fully equipped, and I’ve photographed many babies over the years. Whether baby needs extra cuddles, a feed, or a break—we go with the flow.

If you have any questions or special requests for your upcoming session, I’m always just a message away. I can’t wait to capture these once-in-a-lifetime moments for your family!

Warmly,
Chantelle
